My Netflix movie of the night was Funny Face, starring Fred Astaire and the stunning Audrey Hepburn. I saw this movie for the first time when I was very young. I watched it with my sister, and we were both enamored by Audrey Hepburn - her intelligence, her charm, and her natural beauty.
It's the story of Dick Avery (Astaire), a photographer for Quality Magazine, discovering Jo Stockton (Hepburn) working in a "dark and siniter" book shop in the Village while trying to photograph a model so she looks smart. He falls in love with her "funny face" and convincees the editor in chief of Quality MAgazine that Jo is the face of the Quality woman they are looking for.
Jo, who is hung up on empathicism, dreams of going to PAris to talk to a professor of empathy, and thinks fashion is silly and frivolous. She is convinced that she will get to speak with the professor if she goes with them to Paris to shoot a designer line specifacally for her, with a concluding runway show. As you can imagine, she and Dick fall in love during their week in Paris, and she discovers that she can be intelligent and beautiful at the same time, as it is her intelligence and charm that makes her so lovely.
I highly recommend this movie. It's a quasi-musical (not in the Rodgers and Hammerstein way) with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin. It has plenty of Fred Astaire dancing, which is always a treat, and Hepburn showcases her singing and footwork abilities as well.
It's movies like these that make me sit back and wonder what happened to the real beauties in showbiz. The girls with fuller eyebrows, unaltered profiles and natural hair. Aside from some eyeliner, mascara and rouge, they could throw on a little black dress and look positively stunning. Beauty has so far deterred, it's really very sad to me. There are only a handful of actresses who instill that knock-out, glamourous, yet brainy and articulate package. I'd say Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, and Catherine Zeta Jones are my picks for staying true to themselves and not being afraid to be brainy and beautiful.
