Saturday Flick

I am watching Titanic on TBS while I eat lunch. I haven't watched this in quite a long time, and I've forgotten how good a movie it really is.

And even though I know how it ends, it's still making me hold my breath at moments. I must say, one of my favorite moments just happened...It's when the string quartet finishes playing their last song, and give each other hugs to go their separate ways. The violin player realizes he's not going to survive and starts playing by himself, and they all come back to him and play with him. The song is lovely, and although it's an incredibly depressing part of the movie (people just give up and accept their imminent death), it makes the moment peaceful in a way.

Ok, almost time for the guy to take a dive and hit the propeller.

#3 Signs of Spring

(Written for Friday)

I made a point of going out for lunch so I could get some fresh air. I knew it was supposed to be a warmer day, and I wasn't let down. It was rather cloudy, but I didn't need a jacket and the temperature had to have been at least 55. I love living in New England and experiencing 4 full seasons each year. This is the first year since I moved to CT that we've had what I would consider a real New England winter, with lots of snow and cold temperatures. Heck, there's snow in the forecast for tomorrow and Monday!

I try not to complain too much about the weather we get. It's never hot or cold long enough during the year to be unbearable. Sometimes I wonder why some people stick around this area if they're only going to complain about the weather, but then I take the time to look around and it becomes clear...This part of the country is so beautiful. We have the ocean, the mountains, lakes, forests...The coastal towns thrive off of fresh saltwater fish and shellfish. In the summer we can enjoy the beach and hiking and sailing, in the winter we can go ice skating, skiing, sledding. There is always a Corona or hot chocolate ready to greet us when we get home.
The fall offers us foliage, the smokey smell of someone with a fire in the fireplace, and apple orchards ready to be picked.

And spring...yes, spring promises birds chirping, flowers blossoms, green grass and leaves, and the warmth of the sun. I eagerly look forward to the day I can break out the sandals and skirts, take the plastic off the windows and open them up to air out the house.  Nights of driving home with the windows down and great music blaring out into the night.
It's just around the corner.

#2 When You Sing, You Pray Twice

There is nothing that warms my heart more than a full choir, with four balanced (and strong) sections, singing something truly beautiful. Tonight at choir practice, we started really digging into the music for Lent and Holy Week, which if you ask me, has much better music than Advent.

I feel so blessed to be part of such a wonderful group of people. Not only are these people kind, loving, and remarkable friends, but to have the gift of song and to be able to come together each week to unite our voices in harmony...it's truly a gift.

I really haven't been part of a full choir that sings this kind of music since high school, and even then, it was public school, so all though we sang music of religious origin, we also sang Chattanooga Choo Choo (not knockin' it!) and All That Jazz and many many other genre's of music.

But this is the good stuff.

During four years of college, I attended many great concerts for the Fairfield University Glee Club and not-so-secretly yearned to be a part of such a group. Now I am. There is no audition. There is no scorning of out of tune voices or flubbed words. There is joy. There is friendship. There is giving glory and praise through song. I don't know anyone who doesn't feel something spiritual moving in them when they hear a truly remarkable piece of music.

Do you ever have a day where you come to realize that you basically recycle the same 5 or 6 outfits on a rotating schedule while you have closets and bureaus full of perfectly nice clothes?

I had one of those moments when I got home today and changed into my pjs. I have literally been wearing the same pair of black trousers to work at least 3 days a week (only wearing other pants long enough to wash the black ones) and I keep reaching for the same old shirts and sweaters.

I thought the solution to this problem would be to give my wardrobe a facelift (aka shopping spree!). Well, considering I am hoping to lose 30 pounds, that wouldn't be a smart thing to do right now. Plus, there are about 5 other reasons why this isn't the time to go out spending large amounts of money, especially on clothes.

My goal is to get creative with what I have, and challenge myself to come up with new, fabulous outfits without spending a dime. I know I can do it, I just need to stop being lazy and wake up a little more in the morning. I really have the personality of a wet mop when I wake up in the morning.

Part of me thinks this would be easier if it started warming up a little bit around here. Dresses are so easy, but so not fun in 30 degree weather...

#1 Fall in Love

I was able to make it to 5:30 Mass today, and heard one of the greatest homilies I've ever heard (and I've heard quite a few, to say the least). Fr. Bob was celebrating, and I am very much looking forward to him celebrating our wedding. I will do my best to paraphrase his homily. It was only about 5 minutes long.

Have you ever fallen in love? If you have, you know that there comes a time when you change yourself. Not in a bad way, of course, but you change the way you think about things, you accept things as they are. There is a give and take to make your relationship work, and you and the one you love make sacrifices in order to better yourselves and better your relationship.

Our relationship with God is one in the same. During Lent, we make sacrifices in our lives in order to better our relationship with God. We change things that we do, and we learn about ourselves. And by making sacrifices, we realize what we have and are filled with gratitude and we are able to come closer to God.

Fall in love with God.

Sacrifices & Generosity

It is that time of year in my faith when I reflect upon something I would be willing to sacrifice in my life for the next 6 weeks. I always like this time of year, because spring is approaching, and it is a good time to reflect on how things are going. Am I happy? What's causing my happiness? Am I sad or stressed out? What's causing that? What can I do without that will help me become a more mindful, better person. And what can I put some extra effort into in order to help the world around me?

As much as we'd all like to be idealist angels and save the world from poverty and strife, it's important to be realistic. Is it realistic to say I am going to go to a shelter or organization every day to volunteer? It's not realistic while carrying on the things I do in my life. Would it do any good in the world to give up red meat or soda, other than selfishly hope to lose weight and save a cow? No. I've gone the route of giving up coffee (I was grouchy and downright MEAN for 6 weeks!) and giving up blogging (I became obsessed with reading tons of blogs, taking up much more time than it would take for me to write an entry).

So what can I do to help the world and keep myself mindful and thankful for what I have? Well, I can share something joyful or beautiful from my day and hopefully "spread a little sunshine". I could give up using the computer at home, but that might cause me to be much less productive at work. More than I already am...I think I will celebrate each day, on this blog, with a reflective entry accompanied by a picture. My hope is to use something I love (photography) to put some love out into the world.

Prepare yourselves to get to know me a whole lot better in the next 6 weeks.

I will start tomorrow.

Weighing In on Monday

This Week: -2.4
Total Loss: 3 lbs!!

This was a good week. I paid more attention to my portions, I ate my "activity points" after working out, and I think gave my body this kickstart it didn't get the first week. Even with my niece's christening yesterday, I had cookies, cake, jalapeno poppers (so good, so bad!) and still came out with a loss today. Cheers!

The baptism was really nice, I adore seeing that little baby. I was lucky enough to spend most of Saturday with her, and it was so sweet. She warms my heart. She warms the heart of everyone who sees her. I love watching Sean with her, he turns into this big puddle of goo. I know that he will be a fantastic daddy someday.

On a completely different note, I am so ready for spring!!! I feel like whenever we get around to Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, winter just weighs so heavy, and everyone needs a little sunlight and warmth. Not everyone is lucky enough to have February vacation and a chance to ship off to warmer climates. So I am eagerly awaiting the crocus blossoms, the birds twittering in the morning as I'm leaving for work, and pulling the darn plastic off our windows to let some fresh air into this place!

It's a new week, I hope it's a good one!

Baby Steps

I have made a couple baby steps in the past two weeks in training myself to make better choices. Here are some that I never thought possible, but I kept on truckin' and it wasn't so bad...

  • When we went out for our V-Day dinner, I told the waitress not to bring us any bread. I am usually known for scarfing down at least two chunks, with butter, before we order our entree.
  • Last night while gaming with the guys, we ordered pizza. I ate half a salad from Trader Joe's, sans dressing, before reaching for a slice. I caved and ate 3 slices over the course of the evening (I had only planned on 1) in addition to two alcoholic beverages, but realized I was on a slippery slope and switched to water.
  • Today my friend at work suggested Subway for lunch. MY usual at Subway is a veggie wrap with a bag of chips and a Diet Coke. Today I opted for a 6-inch turkey piled high with veggies since I skipped my morning snack, but paired it with milk and a little baggie of apple slices.
  • On my way home this evening I did not... want... to go... to... the gym. I was dreading it. I convinced myself halfway home to go straight home and do a workout video instead. I felt a little pain in my ankle today and thought it wouldn't be good to go to the gym and further injure myself. About a mile from the exit to the gym I told myself to suck it up and go sweat my butt off, because if I went home I knew I would not work out and I would be down on myself tomorrow. I put in a good hour of low impact cardio (so as to not aggravate the ankle) and strength training on my arms.

These seem like such little things when written down, but they're all things I would play mind games with in the past and take the easy way out. I would eat the bread, I would keep drinking beer all night since I'd already had 2, I would convince myself that chips and soda are ok today as long as I make a better choice next time, and I would have gone home and sat on my butt watching Grey's from last night.

Speaking of Grey's. I need to watch it. But my point is that with each good choice I make, it feels easier to keep making the good choices.

WW Weekly & Mild Vent About Myself

Weight lost this week: .6 lbs
Total weight loss (on WW): .6 lbs
Total weight loss since 1/1: 4 lbs

I am going to just say that I am glad it is a - and not a +, and my goal this week will be to use less weekly "extra" points, as I used the majority of them this past week. Now that I have a better idea of what better choices I can make, I can look forward and adjust better. My key to success is going to be focusing on the positives.

I feel so bad for Sean. I love being a woman, I will sing it from mountaintops every chance I get. But there are some days, not "time of month" related, where I am just unpleasant, moody, and flat out depressing to be around. I can't explain it. I can't blame it on hormones, lack of hormones, anything significant going on in my life. I woke up today, and from the minute he looked at me when I came out of the bedroom, he was constantly asking me what's wrong. I seem down.

Some days, I'm just down. That's all I can say. I try to be an "up" person as much as I can, so some days, I am "down", and there isn't any explanation except that sometimes, being "up" can be exhausting. Sometimes, it's that a day can be so incredibly good that a normal day seems down in comparison. Yesterday, for instance, was great! We went to church together and got to present the gifts of bread and wine, and we, along with several other engaged couples, were blessed as part of World Marriage Day. Then Sean went to work and I accomplished a lot with my day. We had a fun night with dinner and watched the second half of season 2 of 30 Rock till we were practically pissing ourselves laughing!

So today was less eventful, and I can only apologize and say that life with me is not always fun and exciting, and some days I just need to flop on the couch, let my belly hang out, and watch The Real Housewives of Orange County reruns.

Luckily, tomorrow's a new day. I am going to go fix myself some mac 'n cheese (the joy of Smart Ones, they control the portions for me!), and settle in for The Bachelor. Tonight they have their overnight dates! Oh gosh!

Nervous

I have my first WW weigh-in tonight, and I'm a little nervous. If this were Saturday morning, I Would be gung ho for going, as it appeared that I had lost 4 pounds over the week. Well, my weight this morning was a sad story. It would show no loss this week. I let my strict point-counting fall a bit to the wayside. I never went over my points, but I dipped heavily into my weekly points allowance to have some junk food Saturday night, which included homemade brownies, peanut M&Ms, and a couple glasses of wine.

Hopefully my egg white and spinach omelette this morning will make up for some bad decision making this weekend. I guess I will find out at 5:30!

Today, I got to enjoy sleeping in, making a nutritious breakfast, snuggling with the boy, and we're going bowling at lunchtime! I'm not the greatest of bowlers, but I must say, it's one of those activities that is always fun, no matter how much you suck.

I'll check back later with the stats. Stay cool!

Idol Cheers, Boos, and Mehs

I have a confession to make...I did not watch Idol last night. Sean took me out for a very nice dinner where I think I used up all of my extra weekly WW points on my dessert (more on that later), and then we saw Coraline in 3D. It was an excellent movie, I highly recommend it. It's very....twisted. Don't bring your children.

So I had to get the Top 36 off the Idol website this morning, and honestly, I am not really surprised...

Cheers!

For Danny Gokey, or as everyone seems to call him, "Robert Downey Jr. Look-alike". He has a solid voice, a great story, and he's very likeable. I pin him for Top 5 this year. Maybe even Top 3....For Norman Gentle/Nick Mitchell! Only someone that whacky could come from Connecticut. I think that even though he doesn't have the best voice, he can carry a tune, and he is VERY entertaining. I don't think I will grow tired of seeing him anytime soon...For Jackie Tohn and her raspy rocker voice. She needs to quit smoking 2 packs a day, but I like her. I hope to see her in the Top 12...For Scott Macintyre, our vision impaired piano playing contestant with a lot of heart. I just love watching him. It will be interesting to see how he does live. He doesn't have the greatest voice, much like Brook White last season, but there's something about him...And last but not least....ANOOP DAWG! 'Nuff said.

Boos...

Boo Tatiana! I knew they were going to keep her, and I hope America doesn't "Vote For The Worst" to keep her stupid shenanigans around. The girl is whacked. And not in a good way...Boo Nathaniel Marshall! What an annoying drama queen! I do not care to listen to him sing anymore than I already have. He did an acoustic version of "Disturbia"...??? One final and huge BOOOO for getting rid of our boy Jamar, Robert Downey Jr. Look-alike's pal who had a fantastic voice. I can't believe they didn't pick him, and in his palce, picked the two aforementioned jokes. Ugh.

Mehs

Meh for the girls, they're not all too memorable this season, and a couple of them I remember being very screechy and unpleasant to listen to. Meh for them making the two blue collar guys do a sing-off, and keeping both.

Apparently this season is going to be very different. For the next 3 Tuesdays, the contestant will be split into groups of 12, and one group will sing each Tuesday. The top 3 vote-getters each Tuesday will move into the top 12, and on the 4th week the judges will have a wild card round with the leftover contestants and pick their 3 to move into the top 12. I'm intrigued by this because it will get rid of a lot of the average singers quickly, so we won't be tortured through weeks of the less-fun live shows.

So there it is. Stay tuned. VOTE. See you next week!

A.I. '09 Kickoff

As much as we take glee in watching the goofiest and most atrocious of preliminary auditions, American Idol doesn't really start for me until the reveal of the finalists who will go live for us to vote.

I have the DVR set for tonight's revealing of the top....36??? Come on, Idol, why are we being forced to wait through 2 boring nights of audition recaps and watching the contestants sweat in the holding rooms. Just let us have it! And were there 36 finalists last year when they went to live performance? I can't seem to remember. I've always thought it was 24 and they whittled down a guy and a girl each week till they had their top 12.

I am holding in my faves, my boos, and my mehs till all is revealed tonight. God forbid I boo a certain girl who grates on my nerves with every squeak she utters, and they put her through.

I have a couple favorites that I pick for the top slots already based on talent and obvious love from viewers (and judges). There are a couple stars shining, but not too bright, and there are some I just want to mute anything that comes out of their mouths.

Check back later, fellow Idol fanatics, and we'll compare notes.

"Spring" Cleaning

The seemingly warmer days we've had this week have inspired me to start getting myself organized - before spring. I hate wasting gorgeous days inside cleaning, so I've come up with a couple things to chip away at before the real spring comes along. Let's face it, this is fake-spring and we will probably have at least 4 more weeks of cold, bitter, dark and dismal weather.

I've decided to start this Saturday - V-Day, because Sean will be working all day and I can't think of anything else to do. Maybe I'll crank up some showtunes and tapdance my way through the day (and anyone who knows me knows I cannot tap dance to save my life - so this would be quite ridiculous!)...

- Clean out the clothes. Anything I haven't worn in a year, has rips, stains, or any other discolorations will be either tossed or donated. Also, anything plain old fugly and unflattering.
- Gather and organize art supplies. Get rid of old, chunky paints. Make a list of what needs replenishments. Start figuring out how to make the back porch more studio-friendly come Spring.
- Vacuum the front porch. I know it sounds crazy, but someone at some point decided it would be a good idea to carpet our front porch. It has gathered an unsightly amount of salt and dirt this winter, I might as well start chipping away at it.
- Start a list of veggies I want to grow this coming season. I learned last year to stay away from squash and cucumbers. What are some good veggies that grow more upwards? Green beans...tomatoes...What else? Do I dare attempt potatoes?

That's a good start. I'm not sure how much I'll accomplish this weekend, but it should at the very least be a productive Saturday.

Meetings and Dresses

My first WW meeting went really well. The first half was a normal meeting and then the second 30 minutes was for newbies. There were about 7 of us! I didn't feel uncomfortable at all, I can tell it's going to be a great supportive environment. And I look forward to still eating foods I love, yet smarter.

I got a little nervous today. I read on a message board that a girl bought her dress at David's Bridal and they wouldn't let her exchange it for a smaller size once it was out of store 90 days. I need to call my sister-in-law and see how it went for her. I purchased my dress Dec. 27, which if this 90 day exchange is true, I would need to exchange mine by March 27. I am not exchanging for a dress that doesn't fit me yet. And I'm not going to attempt to drop 2 full sizes in just under 2 months.

I'm just going to hope and pray that the DB this girl called was crazy, and whatever happens, happens.

Weight Watchers Day 1

I finally signed up for Weight Watchers today. I've been considering it for, oh, at least two years. So I decided today was the day. I'm in a position where I'm finally financially able without it being a stresser, and as I told a coworker today, 10 bucks a week is what I spend on coffee anyways.

I started in on the e-tools already, and tracked todays food. There are a lot of resources, recipes, message boards, and support offered in the website alone. I think after I go to my first meeting tonight I'll feel a lot better. I have anticipation of spekaing with a leader and getting weighed in, but I know I need that weekly accountability if I am going to be successful.

And Sean, if you read this, get ready to start eating a whole lot healthier. Those tacos last night were delicious, weren't they?

Really Bad Photoshopping

I have so many problems with this picture. And they have nothing to do with the stupidly false advertisement.

Look at the bottom picture. The "skinny" picture. Look at her torso. I'm sorry, but no one has a torso like that, and as someone who uses Photoshop on a daily basis, it's easy to spot a Pucker & Bloat a mile away. This one isn't even subtle. The curve from hip to armpit is a perfect arc. No such curve exists in real life.
Here's how it works....

Normal, un-altered picture of person (me!):

Take out background so no wall stripes are distorted:

And then go to town with your liquify tool! This is how models get cheekbones, no sag under their arms, a nice tush, and a killer waistline. I did this quickly, so it's not very clean:

So, ladies (and gentleman), when you see a svelt, skinny, perfect looking person in a magazine, just keep in mind that they were once normal and pudgy like us. The magical graphic artists with the mouse click of gold probably spent hours cleaning up, airbrushing, and perfecting their otherwise bumpy and blemished mugs.

Don't you feel better about yourself already?

Progress

After adding strength training to my workout routine this week, I am feeling it today. Namely in my legs and abs. I use free weights and the big bouncy balls so I am more challenged and focused on balance and my core, and I cannot tell you how excited I was today to feel soreness in my abs. I have abs! Sure, they're still buried under a bit of chub, but knowing there's something under there and it's getting worked, I feel wonderful.

We had our company luncheon yesterday at Siena Ristorante in Stamford. It had been scheduled for the Friday before Christmas, but we had a huge snowstorm and it was postponed. The food was delicious and I enjoyed 2 glasses of wine (we were there for almost 5 hours). I had to babysit later in the evening, so I was chugging water the rest of the night, and I stepped on the scale later at home. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was down another pound! And that was after a day of feasting and merriment!

After not exercising yesterday, and eating all the delicious food (although I consciously paced myself between bites, so I didn't finish everything in front of me), I am having a lighter day. I am eating mini meals with fruits and veggies for snacks in between, and will probably do an amped up cardio session tonight after work. I am thinking of giving up meat for Lent this year. I love meat, so it would be a sacrifice. Plus, it couldn't hurt to focus on filling my body with plants instead of animal flesh.

Maybe I will grow to love tofu....Maybe.

25 Things About Me

There is a survey floating around Facebook called 25 Random Things, and you're supposed to write out 25 things people may or may not know about you. I did this survey, but wanted to do it again here, with some more in depth answers. I wanted to post something completely open and honest to give you more of an idea of who I am. So whoever is reading this, if you read everything, thank you. It's pretty long. I wish I could promise you a cookie...

1) My dad and grandfather opened a fishing store when I was an infant. I pretty much grew up there. I played there with my siblings as a child, and when I turned 12 my dad taught me how t use the cash register and I worked there every summer until it closed in August 2002, a month before I left for college.

2) I wet my pants in 3rd grade. I was playing softball and I was wearing my favorite paisley stirrup pants. I knew I had to go pee, but I was coming up to bat. I got to first base and whispered to my coach that I had to go. They got me a pinch runner and I ran like the wind to the elementary school. The closest door was locked, so I was running along the side of the school between the building and parked cars, and I couldn't hold it. It was traumatic and I cried, and I got into the school and to the nurses office where she lent me purple sweatpants and helped me clean up. I went back to my game and no one asked me about my pants.

3) I used to live on a dirt road surrounded by conservation land. Once when I was little and home after school with my brother, there was a strange rain storm that made everything look green and I was convinced dinorsaurs were coming to attack us. I never told my brother this.

4) The past 2.5 years of my life are the only years I have gone, from the time I was born, without a pet. When I was born, my parents had a golden retriever named Sandy. We had to give Sandy away when we moved in with my grandparents temporarily while my parents searched for a house. My grandparents had a cat named Nigel. We moved into our new house 8 months later, 3 days before Christmas. My dad brought home a box for me to open 2 days later, and out popped a black kitten which I wanted to name Oatmeal. We named her Frisky, and she was mine. A few years later, Daisy (wire-haired fox terrier) was added to the family. We moved across the street sophomore year to a house with an expansive yard on a pond, which meant we also had geese. So my parents adopted Casey, a 6 month old border collie. My brother moved home from N.C. senior year of high school and brought with him Porkchop, a tan colored cat. Porkchop and Frisky sadly went away (Frisky was 17, Porkchop was 2, we think it was coyotes) within 2 weeks of each other. Daisy died of old age my sophomore year of college. Casey is enjoying middle age with my parents. I moved to my current area right after college, and have desperately wanted an animal of my own to complete my home.

5) I have never stayed close to 1 friend my entire life. I am still moderately in touch with people I have been close to, but if you asked me to name 1 best friend, I couldn't. I have made friends in all walks of life and I still love them all dearly, even if I don't see or talk to them that often.

6) I love my nephews and niece more than I ever knew was possible to love a child that's not my own. Knowing that, I cannot imagine what it will be like when I become a mom someday.

7) I was not a person of high morals in my early high school years. Freshman into sophomore year, I fell for my best friend's boyfriend and he and I had a relationship behind her back. It is possibly the only thing I have truly regretted in my life, because I lost the one person who I might have been able to call my friend for life.

8) I also smoked cigarettes, which I gave up before leaving for college, valuing my singing voice over cancer. Also, Sean told me when we were friends that he could never condone smoking. That had a major impact on my quitting as well.

9) I watch a lot of tv. I love American Idol, 24, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, House, The Dog Whisperer, Top Chef, WE Platinum Weddings and Rich Bride, Poor Bride, Ace of Cakes, Iron Chef, The Real Housewives of New York City, Law and Order SVU, The Office and 30 Rock. I also love to watch Anderson Cooper, Sports Center on Sunday mornings, and Cartoon Networks Adult Swim (Family Guy, Futurama and Robot Chicken). If you could judge a person by what they watch, I'd love to know what you think about me.

10) I don't read very often. I've never considered myself a strong reader, and if I'm not into a book after the first two chapters, I don't try to keep reading. I've breezed through books like DaVinci Code, Twilight, and Chasing Harry Winston because they're easy reads. I'm not dumb, but I don't bother trying to get into things that don't particularly interest me. I'm also more of a visual person, hence my love for television and movies...

11) I started drinking coffee freshman year of high school. My friend's mom let me try some coffee mixed with cocoa one night we were hanging out on the beach, so I started drinking it like that, and slowly weaned myself off the cocoa part.

12) I took a joy ride when my parents were away for a week in high school, end of sophomore year it must've been. We had a station wagon parked in the front yard for sale, and I had forgotten a textbook in my locker that I needed for my homework. I'd had my permit for 8 months at this point. I've never felt more badass and paranoid all at once. Sorry, Mom.

13) Moving in with Sean has taught me far more things I never knew about myself than about him. For instance, I am much more of a compulsive cleaner than I ever thought possible. I've had to teach myself to sit back and relax on weekends instead of spending hours cleaning the entire house.

14) I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. In the past 5 years I have wanted to be a music teacher, an art teacher, a full time church cantor, a nurse, and EMT, an artist, a photographer, a marketing executive, an event planner, own my own store, and be a work-from-home craft-seller.

15) I saw both of my grandfathers on their deathbeds. I saw my Grampa Clark the day he died. He's the first and only person I've ever seen one hour living and breathing and the next lying there lifeless. I was deeply affected by his death, and still have a hard time dealing with his absence in my life. The one thing that makes me sad about my wedding day is that he won't be physically present, although my mom tells me he's my angel, so I know he really will be there.

16) I am usually more comfortable sitting on the ground than in a chair.

17) I love being barefoot. I hate when my feet are completely enclosed in a shoe.

18) I have a deep love for music and art. I started singing at an early age, taught myself piano by ear, took ballet and painting lessons, started playing flute in 5th grade, and continued to perform in plays, musicals, band, marching band, chamber singers, show choir, jazz band and cantoring at church through high school and college.

19) Mary Lou's News coffee trumps all other coffees ever.

20) Both of my grandfathers were professional photographers. My Grampa Trask was a photographer for the Boston Herald and won a Pulitzer Prize for his photo of the sinking Andrea Doria. My Grampa Clark was more into artistic photography of nature, landscape and oceanscapes. I have always loved photography. I didn't get a digital camera until after college. I shot film up until that point, and want to start shooting film again. I also want to get a nicer digital camera and continue developing my artistic and editing skills.

21) I grew up on Disney and Mel Brooks movies. I saw Blazing Saddles and History of the World Pt. 1 before I learned to read.

22) I will probably only let my kids watch DVDs of the TV shows I watched as a kid. Today's kids television scares me. Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show and Old School Sesame Street all the way.

23) I have never broken a bone in my body or needed to visit the hospital for myself (knock on wood). My brother, on the other hand, was very accident prone. In my memory he has broken his collarbone (twice), big toe, needed stitches in his chin from a childhood pushcart accident, and he nearly died when he was 15. We were at one of his summer baseball games and in a blink he was on the ground screaming and covered in blood. He had walked by the on deck batter, and the kid swung and hit him straight on in the face with a metal bat. The bat contacted his nose, and he needed 27 stitches and got two black eyes. The doctors told my parents that if he got hit any closer to his forehead he could be dead.

24) My dad brought me up to be "tough as nails". He always wanted me to be able to fend for myself, so I can fish, cook, mow the lawn, shovel snow, change a tire, use power tools, and carry things over 25 pounds with ease. I'm not really a girly girl. But I embrace my femininity.Oh, and I think this is also why I have a hard time expressing myself when I get upset or angry. I used to tuck those feelings away instead of dealing with them. I'm learning to be more open with my feelings.

25) I have played Symphony Hall in Boston and Carnegie Hall in NYC.

Why, Oh Why?

Dear People of This Area of the Country,

Could someone please tell me why, when it is snowing and the roads are slick, people feel it is necessary to cruise through red lights and stop signs? I understand that the roads are slippery, and that is precisely why you should start easing on the brakes well before approaching an intersection. And please don't give me a dirty look when I slow down at a yellow light.

I eased into a stop at a 4-way near our house on the way home, and the person to my left went straight. Then, the person right behind them moved forward, but didn't stop, they kept going, while I had started to pull forward across the intersection. They stopped in the middle of the intersection when I paused, and flashed their lights. Well, of course I am going to go. I had the right of way. How kind of you to let me go before you.

I didn't mean for this to come across so sarcastic, but I am seriously getting fed up with people's lack of respect for the law, and I am terrified that one of these days I will either get a) broadsided by one of these morons, or b) witness a terrible accident. I hope I am wrong.

The Hurdle is Called Life

I am finding day by day that you cannot let things get in the way of living your life the way you want to.

All this past weekend, I found myself thinking that the past couple weeks were whacky from Sean having to work overnights. I ate dinner after 9 most nights, I didn't sleep as well without him there, and it was strange not really seeing each other, even though we live together.

However, that is his job. That's how life is going to be as long as he does what he does. And I am completely fine with that; it makes him happy, he's great at what he does, and he has excelled very quickly in just over two years. He is one of the lucky people on this earth who gets to do something he really loves for a living.

I cannot use this as an excuse for my unhealthy habits. I started out the year at full throttle, and I lost 5 pounds, and in the past two weeks, I didn't gain weight back, but I definitely didn't have the dedication to going to the gym and watching what I was eating. There is always going to be "stuff" going on in life, hard days at work, money stress, you name it. I can't let those things keep me from taking the steps I need to take to be healthy.

I am the queen of excuses when it comes to my health and my weight. If I workout, I mentally feel tell myself I can have food that's bad for me because I burned some calories off. If I have 1 glass of wine with dinner, I might as well have two because I've already had one, so what's the point? I need to stop, and I need to wipe the dirty mess of a slate clean and move forward.

Change doesn't happen overnight, but I definitely feel I need to make more effort to ensure these changes take place. I will be honest here, it's going to get down and dirty in the next few weeks. I apologize for grumpiness, mood swings, and post raving about how much I want to eat nothing but chocolate. Food is going to be my biggest challenge. I have 25 years of bad habits to reverse.

Good Times, Noodle Salad...

I don't need to elaborate on the fact that the Superbowl is tonight, and yes, I'll be watching. We are having a few friends over to eat some good food, have some laughs, and hope that the Cardinals can take it all home.

This year is astronomically different from last year though. Last year, I was nervous. On the Friday before, I could barely talk at work, let alone focus. I work with tons of Giants fans, and there was so much tension in the air. And that Sunday, I was sick with nerves. Of course, we all know how it panned out. I cried. I swore. I screamed at the TV when they showed the Giants coach and I yelled that he was f***in ugly. It was a rough night.

I am very much looking forward to tonight. I have no emotion invested in it. I gues I am rooting for the Cardinals because I'd like to see them win their first championship, but I don't care either way. I am more looking forward to making my meatballs and chicken snacks, eating food and drinking beer with some great people.

I love hosting parties at our house. I feel like it's a good place where people feel comfortable, can kick off their shoes and put their feet up and have a laugh. So regardless of who wins tonight, I will be having a good time, and can guarantee that I will sleep MUCH better than I did last year.

I think it helps that baseball season is right around the corner.
